The shire covers an area of over 185,000 square kilometres (which is 80% of the size of Victoria) with an estimated population of approximately 7,000 and encompasses the communities of Barunga, Borroloola, Bulman, Jilkminggan, Manyallaluk, Mataranka, Minyerri, Ngukurr, Numbulwar, Robinson River and Wugularr.

About the Opportunity

Roper Gulf Regional Council has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Human Resources Coordinator to join their professional team, based in Katherine, NT on a full-time basis.

Reporting to the Senior Human Resources Coordinator, in this true generalist role you'll be responsible for facilitating the achievement of Council’s objectives, through the provision of high quality human resources support to Council managers and employees. You’ll be exposed to the whole cycle of HR functions and be fully supported along the way.

Some of your key responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Administering and providing guidance and support on a range of HR duties, including recruitment, compliance and performance management;
  • Ensuring manager and employee understanding and compliance with Council’s HR policy and procedures;
  • Developing and supporting best practice HR systems, policy and processes;
  • Maintaining the data integrity upon which Council will rely;
  • Identifying continual improvements to initiatives;
  • Representing Council in a highly professional manner; and
  • Promoting the values, vision and mission of Council.

To succeed, you'll have tertiary qualifications in Human Resource Management, or a proven background in a similar human resources role, along with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary HR issues and practices. You will also have an awareness of issues affecting Indigenous communities in remote locations, partnered with an understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing HR policies, strategies and projects will be essential to your success in this role. A degree qualification in human resources or experience in Local Government will be highly regarded.

Roper Gulf Regional Council is seeking a candidate who has highly developed time management and organisational skills. You will consider yourself a team-player and will be flexible and confident in adapting to changing priorities. You'll show a commitment to providing exceptional customer service, coupled with the ability to draft quality correspondence and reports. Additionally, you'll need well developed interpersonal and communication skills, enabling you to liaise with a wide variety of employees and external stakeholders, ensuring strong working relationships are established.

To be considered, candidates must demonstrate a high degree of computer literacy and hold a current 'C' class manual driver's licence for the Northern Territory. You will also be required to undertake a Criminal History Check and update each year as required.
