Roper Gulf Regional Council (RGRC) provides a range of services over an area that spans 185,000 sq km (80% the size of Victoria) that covers the region east and southeast of Katherine, Northern Territory. The total estimated resident population of the region is 6,919.

About the Opportunity

Roper Gulf Regional Council has a fantastic opportunity for a full time Communications Coordinator to join its established Corporate Governance team in Katherine, NT. 

Reporting to the Manager Governance and Corporate Planning, you will be responsible for seeking and utilising media opportunities that will build and enhance the profile of Roper Gulf Regional Council to targeted audiences. This position supports the Governance, Corporate Planning & Compliance Unit.

Some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Producing weekly media releases and establishing and maintaining a media contacts list;
  • Acting as an official point of contact for incoming media enquiries pertaining to Roper Gulf Regional Council;
  • Writing and editing publications, articles, speeches and presentations;
  • Creating, maintaining and generating policies and media strategies for the future of Roper Gulf Regional Council;
  • Planning, developing and implementing Public Relations Strategies and communications;
  • Fostering community relations through involvement in community initiatives and 
  • Maintaining and updating information on the organisation’s website and social media pages.

To be considered, you must have proven, relevant experience in media and/or communications and the demonstrated ability to write non-standard correspondence, reports and/or submissions that require original content, working and paragraph construction. 

Ideally, you would have previous experience working within a local government authority or similar organisation and knowledge of corporate and governance practices relevant to Local Government. It goes without saying that you will also need exceptional written and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail and the ability to manage and prioritise your own workload.

Tertiary qualifications in communications or similar, as well as experience with social media applications, development and appropriate use, would be highly regarded but is not mandatory to your success in this position.  

Roper Gulf Regional Council is seeking a driven and professional team player who can hit the ground running and deliver positive and engaging content for Council and its audiences. Candidates with an awareness of issues affecting Indigenous communities in remote locations will be best suited to this position, equipping you with the ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with Indigenous people.

Please note, some out of hours work, including occasional travel to remote communities requiring overnight stays will be required. A current 'C' class manual driver's licence is essential to be considered for this position.

Prior to employment with Roper Gulf Regional Council you must obtain the following:

  • Undertake a new criminal history check at commencement of employment with RGRC;
  • At commencement of employment hold a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (OCHRE Card) or provide an application receipt for an exemption to be approved by SAFE NT prior to commencing; and
  • Be an Australian Resident or provide the current, relevant Visa to work within Australia.
